Welcome Back Faith Sullivan!
It wasn’t that long ago that Faith Sullivan was roaming the halls of West Valley as a student. Now the 2019 grad is returning to West Valley to teach fifth grade at Summitview Elementary.
“I attended three West Valley elementary schools, but here I am going to work at one of the only ones I didn’t attend,” laughs Sullivan.
Sullivan got a head start on her career during her junior year at West Valley High School when she signed up for an elementary education child development program offered in partnership with Yakima Valley College. During the first half of the year, Sullivan attended four days at the high school and spent Fridays in Mr. Van Dyke’s third-grade classroom at Wide Hollow. Afterward, her teacher Ms. Anson, who has since retired, encouraged Sullivan to sign up for the second half of the program, which allowed her to spend four days in preschool and Kindergarten classrooms and one day at the high school.
“I just found I loved being in the classroom and working directly with the students. I knew that was what I was going to do with my career,” says Sullivan.
Sullivan went on to attend the University of Montana and graduated with a degree in elementary education and a minor in mathematics. Typically, teachers are required to have six months of student teaching to complete their degree, but Sullivan was instead offered a full-time job in a rural school in Montana that fulfilled her student teaching requirement.
“It was wild,” says Sullivan. “I was the only math teacher in the school and was teaching sixth, seventh, and eighth grade math on my own.”
While Sullivan enjoyed Montana, she was excited to get back to Yakima and especially to teach fifth grade. She says fifth grade through middle school students are really the ages she’s most excited to work with.
“At this age, students are still really excited about school and old enough to joke around with, but you can also get into more complex concepts with them,” explains Sullivan.
As for her future plans, Sullivan says she’s really excited to start her work at Summitview, but down the road she may pursue her master’s degree in educational leadership to become a principal. She said she had the opportunity to shadow three principals for a school project and really enjoyed the experience.
But for now, Sullivan is just excited to start making a difference.
“I just love building the relationships with the kids and seeing that light bulb moment when they finally get it,” says Sullivan. “I love when you can see that growth in them.”

Alumna de West Valley regresa a enseñar en Summitview
No hace tanto tiempo que Faith Sullivan recorría los pasillos de West Valley como estudiante. Ahora, la graduada de 2019 regresa a West Valley para enseñar quinto grado en Summitview Elementary.
"Asistí a tres escuelas primarias de West Valley, pero aquí voy a trabajar en una de las únicas a las que no asistí," comenta Sullivan mientras sonríe.
Sullivan empezó su carrera durante su tercer año en el West Valley High School, cuando se matriculó en un programa de desarrollo infantil de educación primaria ofrecido en colaboración con el Yakima Valley College. Durante la primera mitad del año, Sullivan asistió cuatro días al instituto y pasó los viernes en la clase de tercer grado del Sr. Van Dyke en Wide Hollow. Después, su profesora, la Sra. Anson, que ya se ha jubilado, animó a Sullivan a apuntarse a la segunda parte del programa, lo que le permitió pasar cuatro días en aulas de preescolar y jardín de infancia y un día en el instituto.
"Descubrí que me encantaba estar en el aula y trabajar directamente con los alumnos. Sabía que eso era lo que iba a hacer con mi carrera," dice Sullivan.
Sullivan estudió en la Universidad de Montana y se licenció en Educación Primaria y Matemática. Normalmente, los profesores deben realizar seis meses de prácticas para completar su titulación, pero a Sullivan le ofrecieron un trabajo a tiempo completo en una escuela rural de Montana que cumplía su requisito de estudiante de magisterio.
"Fue una locura," dice Sullivan. "Era la única profesora de matemática del colegio y daba clases de matemática de sexto, séptimo y octavo yo sola."
Aunque Sullivan disfrutó estar en Montana, le hacía ilusión volver a Yakima y, sobre todo, enseñar en quinto grado. Dice que los alumnos de quinto grado hasta los de secundaria sin dudas son las edades con las que más le entusiasma trabajar.
"A esta edad, los alumnos todavía están entusiasmados con la escuela y tienen edad suficiente para hacer bromas, pero también se pueden analizar conceptos más complejos con ellos," explica Sullivan.
En cuanto a sus planes de futuro, Sullivan dice que está muy emocionada por empezar a trabajar en Summitview, pero que más adelante podría cursar un máster en liderazgo educativo para convertirse en directora. Dijo que había tenido la oportunidad de seguir de cerca a tres directores para un proyecto escolar y que le había gustado mucho la experiencia.
Por ahora, Sullivan está entusiasmada por empezar a marcar la diferencia.
"Me encanta establecer relaciones con los niños y ver cómo se les enciende la bombilla cuando por fin entienden algo," dice Sullivan. "Me encanta cuando puedes ver ese crecimiento en ellos."
