Safety and Belonging at Apple Valley

• At Apple Valley Elementary, Principal Heidi Sutton and her team work hard to start every day off right. They’ve taken WVSD’s strategic goals to heart, building an environment of safety and belonging where students feel valued and supported.
• From the moment students walk through the doors, they are brought into engagement activities that help them start the day positively. Student-centered “morning meetings” kick off the day’s learning with opportunities for sharing, listening, and community-building in their classrooms with anything from a trivia question or a joke to an interesting topic shared between students and teachers. And, in younger grades, “soft starts” engage students in STEM-based, hands-on activities that engage their creativity and encourage imaginative play with their peers like building and creating with Play-Doh or Legos, or playing a board game. These activities also help children talk with each other, build communication skills, and ease them into the curriculum for the day.
• Communication and play are keys to getting kids ready to learn, but this community-building brings another essential component into the classroom. As Dr. Geoffrey Cohen notes in his book Belonging, “Students who report a strong sense of belonging tend to be more motivated to learn, perform better academically, have better rates of attendance, engage in less misconduct and fewer health-threatening behaviors, and have higher self-esteem and better mental health.” From fostering healthy interpersonal relationships to conflict resolution and self-regulation, students practice skills that will improve both their academic and personal lives.
• Principal Sutton believes relationships are the foundation of a safe and supportive school. “The essence of our success is our relationships. We take the time to truly know our students and families,” she says. “It’s about creating a culture where every child feels valued and cared for.” From Family Engagement Conferences before the school year begins to community events like the Monster Ball and Donuts with Grown-Ups, Apple Valley makes sure families are part of the school experience.
• Students also take an active role in fostering a sense of belonging. Leadership Crew, Safety Patrol, and Honor Guard provide opportunities for kids to contribute to the positive school culture. Spirit days, assemblies, and social media highlight fun at school and help to celebrate student achievements. All of this work reinforces the message that Apple Valley is a place where everyone belongs.
• Beyond its halls, Apple Valley partners with local organizations like Love on a Leash, the Yakima Police Department, and local churches and businesses. These partnerships show Apple Valley students that they have connections to the greater community. We hope students see and feel the commitment that teachers, staff, families, and the community make toward creating an atmosphere where children can be their best selves. Through strong relationships, engaging activities, and a commitment to every child’s well-being, Apple Valley brings WVSD’s culture of safety and belonging to life.

• En la Escuela Primaria Apple Valley, la directora Heidi Sutton y su equipo se esfuerzan por empezar cada día con buen pie. Han tomado muy en serio los objetivos estratégicos del Distrito Escolar Unificado de West Valley (WVSD), creando un ambiente de seguridad y pertenencia donde los estudiantes se sienten valorados y apoyados.
• Desde el momento en que los estudiantes entran por la puerta, participan en actividades participativas que les ayudan a empezar el día con optimismo. Las "reuniones matutinas" centradas en los estudiantes dan inicio al aprendizaje del día con oportunidades para compartir, escuchar y fomentar el sentido de comunidad en sus aulas, con cualquier cosa, desde una pregunta de trivia o un chiste hasta un tema interesante compartido entre estudiantes y maestros. Como señala el Dr. Geoffrey Cohen en su libro "Belonging": "Los estudiantes que manifiestan un fuerte sentido de pertenencia tienden a estar más motivados para aprender, tienen un mejor rendimiento académico, mejores índices de asistencia, presentan menos faltas de conducta y comportamientos que amenazan la salud, y tienen una mayor autoestima y una mejor salud mental". Desde el fomento de relaciones interpersonales saludables hasta la resolución de conflictos y la autorregulación, los estudiantes practican habilidades que mejorarán tanto su vida académica como personal.
• La directora Sutton cree que las relaciones son la base de una escuela segura y solidaria. "La esencia de nuestro éxito reside en nuestras relaciones. Nos tomamos el tiempo para conocer verdaderamente a nuestros estudiantes y familias", afirma. "Se trata de crear una cultura donde cada niño se sienta valorado y cuidado". Desde las Conferencias de Participación Familiar antes del inicio del año escolar hasta eventos comunitarios como el Monster Ball y Donuts with Grown-Ups, Apple Valley se asegura de que las familias formen parte de la experiencia escolar.
• Los estudiantes también participan activamente en el fomento del sentido de pertenencia.
